Location

About the area

Harbour Heritage and Manggarai Traditions

Labuan Bajo, a lively harbour town in West Manggarai, was once a modest fishing settlement before becoming the gateway to Komodo National Park. Its historic waterfront and Kampung Ujung retain traces of the old maritime community, while nearby Manggarai villages such as Melo preserve traditional houses, ceremonial dances and the communal customs of Flores. Batu Cermin Cave, where fossilised coral reveals the area’s ancient seabed origins, adds a fascinating geological chapter to the town’s story.

Cool Retreats Beyond the Tropical Sun

Indoor diversions in Labuan Bajo include restorative spas, relaxed cafes overlooking the port and restaurants serving Flores coffee, grilled seafood and Indonesian specialities. Travellers can browse small galleries and craft shops for woven songket textiles, woodcarvings and locally made souvenirs. Dive centres also offer classroom sessions for beginners, while selected hotels and community venues arrange Indonesian cooking lessons and cultural performances.

Island Trails and Sapphire Seas

Outdoor adventure defines Labuan Bajo. Boat trips head into Komodo National Park for snorkelling, diving and island trekking, with Padar Island offering the region’s most celebrated panorama of curved bays. Closer to town, Bukit Sylvia and Bukit Amelia are rewarding sunset viewpoints, while Rangko Cave shelters a striking saltwater pool. Kayaking, beach visits and excursions to waterfalls and traditional villages reveal the varied landscapes of western Flores.

Dragons, Mantas and Marine Life

Labuan Bajo is the principal base for encountering the wildlife of Komodo National Park. Guided walks on Komodo and Rinca islands may reveal Komodo dragons, Timor deer, wild boar, water buffalo and colourful birdlife. Offshore, nutrient rich currents support manta rays, sea turtles, reef sharks and dense schools of tropical fish. Responsible tours maintain safe distances from wildlife and help protect the coral reefs, mangroves and dry savannah habitats of this UNESCO listed region.
